In my previous post, I shared some tips for finding and expressing feelings of gratitude. Now that you can identify opportunities to acknowledge said feelings, how can you get the most out of practicing gratitude?

Ask why you are grateful for this thing/person/place and keep boiling it down by asking why again and again.  Like the three-year old in you would.  

Make it a mindful. Pause and reflect on what you are grateful for without hurrying over the details. Feel the feels.

Share the love. Tell someone (/your cat) what you are grateful for if you feel it in that moment.

I will illustrate next level gratitude with an example that also explains why these two posts made their way from my brain, to the interwebs:

A few days ago, I woke up with Can’t Feel My Face by The Weekend stuck in my head. Chorus. On. Repeat. Later that day, the song came on the playlist I was listening to. “Yay!” I said to myself, as I continued to work without skipping a beat (read: 3 minutes of work-beats skipped due to lip syncing and head bobbing). At the end of the song, I felt happy! Grateful that the song came on.

Consider, these levels of gratitude:

  1. I am grateful for Songza.

  2. I am grateful for Songza because I can find music I like; new or old.

  3. I am grateful for Songza because I am reminded how fortunate I am to have my sense of hearing, and that I am afforded the luxury of internet access.

The above thought process was the result of a mind-wandering tangent of listening to music at my desk job whilst reading health policy legislation. For a moment it brought me out of the humdrum of office life and made me feel, well, grateful!

Now, I could’ve easily achieved this state of appreciation by acknowledging how grateful I am that I have a job...and that I live in a country that has public health care, but - oh! Would you look at that: suddenly the desk job doesn’t feel so humdrum! That’s the thing about gratitude, once you start acknowledging it, suddenly it’s everywhere.
